Urban Journal: "Clean & Green New Town - A Joint Initiative"

Urban Journal: "Clean & Green New Town - A Joint Initiative"
We, the residents of New town were very much interested in the initiative taken by HIDCO by calling a meeting of all stakeholders regarding “Clean and green Newtown”. We were utterly disheartened  by the report in today’s Telegraph http://www.telegraphindia.com/1120626/jsp/calcutta/story_15656568.jsp .
The meeting, called to discuss the basic problem of encroachment of hawkers in Newtown esp. Action Area 1.  As is evident from Mr. Debashis Sen’s blog, the meeting took resolutions on a number of issues, except encroachment. Hawkers in Action Area 1 are increasing very frequently. It was not much of a problem 4 or 5 years back when the number of residents was very few. Today as the number of residents has increased, traffic also increased and with the hawkers sitting on the footpaths and even on the roads, it is surprising that accidents don’t occur every day.
We welcome all the steps that Mr. Debashis Sen is taking to solve and beautify Newtown. We would request Mr Sen to take steps to solve the hawker menace in front of Utsa and DCL and in the pavements between Animikha and DLF building. Setting up of Block Markets and Mobile vans are a possible solution in this respect.
